Sarna Marcus

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sarna Marcus received her art training at Pratt Institute and, after moving to Washington DC, at the Corcoran School of Art.  Marcus soon affiliated with the Washington Women’s Arts Center advocating a new understanding of women’s art as distinct from traditional art which assumed depiction of woman-as-object.

Marcus works in a variety of media—watercolor, oils, pastel, prismacolor—to create often fecund images that recall seeds, pods, eggs, or atoms caught at the moment of inception.  In a recent review by art critic Mark Jenkins of the Washington Post, we read that “her paintings serve as a showcase for the artist’s skill.”  Marcus has been member of the Foundry Gallery for the past five years.  Her work has been displayed at venues throughout the Washington DC area and is included in private collections in New York, Los Angeles, DC, and Maryland.
