Ruth Marcus

Ruth Marcus expresses the world around her through her art.  The starting point can be just a momentary glimpse of a scenic vista or an ancient town, or perhaps an intimate look at a flower. Ruth Marcus 7x9 72 dpi

What appeals most to Ruth is the emotional impact of the colors, shapes and textures she sees.  Her latest paintings are inspired by her travels, focusing on natural landscapes punctuated by a touch of architecture, the evidence of human interaction with the land.  Each painting becomes a journey, immersing her in the feelings experienced during these trips.  Oil paint is her current medium of choice, though she also enjoys working in acrylic and watercolor.

A native New Yorker, Ruth received her B.A. and M.S. from Queens College of the City University of New York.  She shared her passion for art with young people during her career as an art teacher in Washington, DC and New York City.  Ruth was co-head of the art department at the Dalton School in New York before moving to the Washington area in 1989.  For twenty-one years she taught art at Georgetown Day School, retiring in June, 2011 to pursue her art full-time.
