Artists & Makers Studios in Rockville Welcomes Returning Metro Area Artist Schroeder Cherry for a January 2022 Solo Exhibit
(Rockville, MD) – Artists & Makers Studios on Parklawn Drive in Rockville will welcome featured artist Schroeder Cherry for his exhibit “Future Voters and Other Stories” in collage on wood along with two additional exhibits and Open Studios. The January 8th opening will run from 11am – 3pm and will usher in the new year. Enjoy additional exhibits – “What I am Working On” with Resident Artists – either works in progress or newly finished works, and Gallery 209 Artists exhibiting their latest work.
Using paint, glass, keys, locks, buttons and other objects on wood, Schroeder Cherry creates open-ended narratives based on events from the past, present and his imagination. The Future Voter Series is inspired by children witnessing recent voter suppression efforts across the U.S. The Barber shop Series reflects on those communal spaces where men gather to get a shave their hair cut. The Rainbow Keeper Series illustrates those responsible for mending colors and then displaying them in the sky to indicate a storm is over. Each of these pieces is open-ended because they welcome interpretation of the viewer. There is no one way to tell a story. Curated by Cathy Hirsh.
Originally from Washington, D.C., Schroeder Cherry is a now Baltimore-based artist who captures everyday scenes of African diaspora life. He earned a bachelor’s degree in painting and puppetry from The University of Michigan; a master’s degree in museum education from George Washington University; and a doctorate in museum education from Columbia University. An award winning artist, his recent Barbershop Series received an exhibition at The Walters Art Museum in 2019 as a Sondheim finalist, and a one-man exhibition at Baltimore City Hall in 2020. He was awarded the 2020 Municipal Art Society of Baltimore City Artist Travel Prize for research in Bahia, Brazil. His works are found in private and public collections across the US.
