About Evelyn Little

My body of work is centered in investigating the formal elements of the figure. Using drawings from life as the foundation, I create new relationships within my work, manually reconstructing new compositions. This approach allows me to explore the figure, isolating small areas to emphasize the line, shape, and form within a new construction.

I begin by cutting up the drawings into rectangular sections and reassemble them into new arrangements, which then become the basis for my paintings. When I put the pieces together, I keep them face down as I shuffle and reassemble them into their new compositions.  This allows an almost random exploration of the form, which can then be reformatted into new compositions.

In the compositions, I look for an arrangement of forms that feel engaged or complete, balanced in a way. Using acrylic paint on canvas or wood panel, I experiment and play with the new forms, emphasizing the relationships between the formal elements in each composition.
